Every ECM/DMS architecture aims at offering a central and complete view of ALL
business-critical documents. For this reason, files/documents created with MS Office
applications (e.g. MS Word) also have to be included in the electronic file.

There are two methods to store and search for MS Office files:

Archiving by means of an MS Office plug-in: After installing the plug-in at the
workstation, the user will be able to access a new menu item in the MS Office application
(Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) to store files in the PAM HSM Archive. This feature
can be compared to "Save as..." function. When the menu item is invoked, the user can
fill in key words in an indexing form. Once it has been completed, it is immediately
stored in the central archive. The indexing form is also used to retrieve archived data
from the electronic archive. During the process, other users are blocked from editing
this particular file in the archive (check-out method).
